Peter

Peter Maclaverty

An inspiration for the young and old for his gentle manner and his drive to promote Cricket here in Switzerland when Cricket as a sport was totally unheard of. He has been instrumental in founding the Berne Cricket Club and later Cricket governing body in Switzerland-Cricket Switzerland (previously-Swiss Cricket Association). It is hard to imagine the challenges faced when trying to find people who have heard of Cricket, let alone people who could play cricket in the 1970s. Staying determined all these years and creating an easy platform for locals and expats to participate and become active members at the numerous clubs including Berne Cricket Club, spread all over Switzerland under Cricket Switzerland is a phenomenal achievement. DEAR SIR, YOU WILL BE MISSED- REST IN JOY!

In Remembrance

- Peter’s demise has left a big hole in my sporting life. He was a founder member of the BCC in 1977 and I had the pleasure of being associated with him for 37 years!
- His untiring efforts at promoting Cricket in Switzerland, his playing talents in Cricket, Golf, Squash and Tennis will always be an example for me.
- The BCC tours to Germany, Italy and England were highlights and we had great times playing and socializing together. Our golf sessions were extremely enjoyable and Peter was always competitive, perfecting his game whenever he could.
- In Cricket Peter hated being given out LBW; I know, since I was the Umpire a few times and still remember his terrifying glares when he left the crease.
- Peter turned 70 on Sunday, 27th July and I had the pleasure of sharing a piece of lemon cake with him. His battle against his illness was not as lonely as his lone sessions against the bowling machine. He stood tall and batted strongly, with dignity and humour, always considerate of his wife Sarah, who helped him selflessly and courageously till the end.
- Rest in peace Peter. I shall miss you.”

“I first met Peter in 1984. At the time, I happened to be invited to the BCC (AGM). He was absolutely commited to cricket and we have had great times on and of the field. I have been in many committee’s with Peter both in Swiss Cricket and Bern Cricket, toured many a times with him representing the Swiss Team. A great opening battsman and an absolute gentleman.”

“It is with great sadness that Berne Cricket Club informs its members and friends of the passing of stalwart Peter MacLaverty on 6 August 2014, after a long illness.
Peter was a founding member of Berne Cricket Club and held various executive roles at the Club until his last day, including President for many years.
Peter played for the Club from its foundation and for more than 20 years afterwards, mainly as a batsman.
Peter was also a founder of organised cricket across Switzerland, having been involved in various roles in the then Swiss Cricket Association.
Berne Cricket Club has lost a member of considerable enthusiasm, a mentor to others, a dependable and skilled administrator and player who will be sorely missed.
May he rest in peace.
On behalf of the Berne Cricket Club Committee and Members.”

“I have known Peter since the last 4 years from the time I joined the Berne Cricket Club. A very magnetic and charming personality were just some of his many qualities. Always been very kind and like a fatherly figure whenever we interacted. Remember him for congratulating me on my first century for the club. Didn’t know until late that we shared the same birthdate. You will be missed Peter. #Stalwart”

“I have fond memories of being Peter’s opening partner, where I was the aggressor, he was pure class and style in his strokes. I can remember his compliments were short but meaningful, in his own inimitable baritone, “Good shot, Tissa”. I remember our fun filled overseas cricket tours. These are some of the many memories I will fondly carry with me. Thank you Peter for enriching our lives. RIP”

“10th June 1978 ,Marzili. Occasion Basel CC’s first ever match against Berne CC and the first time I met Peter MacLaverty. As I remember, the game was nothing special except that we lost! Whilst Peter played a modest innings that day it did not prepare us for the onslaught of runs scored against us by Peter and a certain gentleman named Lou Adihetty over the next 10 years or more. Fortunately Peter did not bowl as well as he batted! Peter was not only a key member of Berne CC but also was very much involved with the Swiss Cricket Association from the very beginning, being it’s first treasurer and later match manager. He was instumental in putting together the very first draft of the League Rules and organised many cricket tours, and contributed substantially to the development of the Association in its early years. I have shared very happy times with him during the many cricket matches we played as opponents and ocasionally on the same side. I shall always remember his Irish wit, his not very flattering and somtimes priceless comments about Basle CC’s performances against Berne in the pages of HowZat, Berne’s cricketing magazine, and above all his attitude to the game of cricket. Competitive but always fair. I feel privileged to have known him.”
